OS X 10.11 El Capitan, following on from Mavericks and Yosemite, is to be offered as a free upgrade for existing Mac users of any OS X version from 10.6.7 Snow Leopard onwards. MacOS 10.12 Sierra.
You can upgrade to macOS Sierra from OS X Lion or later on any of the following Mac models. Your Mac also needs at least 2GB of memory and 8.8GB of available storage space.
- If you haven't updated to Mojave yet, read on to find out how to update to Mojave from High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, or even older version of Mac OS X below.
- The only full upgrade installers are in the Mac App Store, and here is the link to How to upgrade to macOS High Sierra. Before you leap from Yosemite, check the specific printer/scanner vendor driver sites to verify if either have High Sierra driver support. Also check with your third-party applications vendor sites that their applications remain compatible with High Sierra, and preferably, are 64-bit applications.
- In other words, just because your Mac was compatible with El Capitan (OS X 10.11), Yosemite (10.10), Mavericks (10.9), or Mountain Lion (10.8) may not necessarily mean that you'll be able to upgrade to Sierra.

Make a backup

Get connected

Install the macOS installer
Double-click the downloaded file to open a window showing its contents. Mac write to ntfs free. Then double-click the file within, named InstallOS.pkg.

Begin installation
After installation of the installer is complete, open the Applications folder on your Mac, then double-click the file named Install macOS Sierra.

Click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions. You might find it easiest to begin installation in the evening so that it can complete overnight, if needed.
Allow installation to complete
Please allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart, show a progress bar, or show a blank screen several times as it installs both macOS and related updates to your Mac firmware.
